Best Reading Apps for Preschoolers (Ages 3-5)

Published: February 27, 2014

This list includes the top 5 reading apps for preschoolers based on my own experience using them with my own kids. I have chosen them based on content, quality, and effectiveness.

  1. Endless Reader by Originator

Endless Reader introduces “sight words”, the most commonly used words in school, library, and children’s books. Kids just love learning sight words with the adorable Endless monsters.

Learning sight words at an early age is crucial for kids to become great readers and lifelong learners. This fun and engaging app is perfect for learning sight words. Kids have so much fun playing this app that they don't even realize they are learning. Use it along side the Endless Alphabet app listed below.

  2. Endless Alphabet by Originator

Set the stage for reading success with this delightfully interactive educational app. Kids will have a blast learning their ABC’s and building vocabulary with the adorable monsters in Endless Alphabet.

This app goes perfectly with the Endless Reader app mentioned previously. It has the same cute monsters and fun animations and sounds that will keep kids engaged. Kids will learn their ABCs in no time with this app.

  3. Starfall ABCs

Children delight as they see, hear, and interact with letters and sounds in words, sentences, and games. They learn to recognize letters and develop skills that will ensure they become confident leaders. All children, and especially English language learners, benefit.

My favorite part about this app is the fact that it is incredibly interactive anf fun!

  4. Starfall Learn to Read

Each numbered section features a vowel sound and its related spelling. Your child will hear, touch, read and eventually master this sound-spelling through a variety of engaging activities, movies, and songs. Encourage your child to play and explore! Your child will come to recognize the relationship between spoken and written language while having fun learning to read. This app is excellent for emerging readers!

  5. Rocket Speller by Little Big Thinkers

Rocket Speller is a fun and engaging spelling app for 3-7 year olds. Educators, occupational therapists, special education teachers, and parents agree that kids are engaged and learning with this app.

Kids join Zip the alien on an out-of-this-world spelling adventure to build a fancy new rocket. Now with 5 levels of difficulty, kids spell words to fuel his spaceship and help him choose the rocket pieces he needs. Once they have built their custom rocket ship, kids steer it through space to collect stars in an entertaining mini-game.

Endless Reader and Endless Alphabet are absolutely my top picks for preschoolers learning to read!

As a follow-up to Endless Alphabet, set the stage for early reading success with Endless Reader! This app introduces "sight words", the most commonly used words in school, library, and children's books. Kids need to recognize these words by sight in order to achieve reading fluency. Recognizing sight words is advantageous for beginning readers because many of these words have unusual spelling, cannot be sounded out using phonics knowledge, and often cannot be represented using pictures.

Kids will have a blast learning sight words and their context and usage with the adorable Endless monsters. Each word features an interactive word puzzle with letters that come alive, and then a sentence puzzle with words that become what they describe. See the word "dog" as a barking dog, and the word "up" reach for the sky!
