Best Characters: A Song of Ice and Fire Series

Published: December 2, 2013

If your a fan of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones than you may have heard of a little series of books called A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. If so, then you know there are a plethora of characcters that come and go (die gruling/shocking deaths) throughout the series. A few character only live a chapter long! Well this list celebrates my favorite characters of the series those that are still alive anyway.

  1. Tyrion Lannister

I relate closely to this character. The literal underdog, a little person with a 4 ton chip on his shoulder. Snarky, intelligent and hell bent on proving his family wrong. Though stunted he may be, in a number of ways, he never lets any of it slow him down. In fact the character often uses these disadvantages to his advantage. Allowing his enimies to underestimate him and then swooping in the for kill when they least expect it.

IMO this makes Tyrion one of Martin's more well rounded three dimensional characters. My personal favorite, I'm sure others would agree.

  2. Daenerys Targaryen

Now, one cannot discuss ASoIaF series without mentioning The Mother Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. She is by far the favorite of both the book and tv series. Starting out as a virtual slave to her older brother, then rising from a simple house wife to adored and absolute ruler of her domain.

Daenerys' journey is by far the most progressive of any other (Stannis may come a close second in the books to come). Martin has out done himself, superb writing.

  3. Theon Greyjoy

OK, I'll admit, this one may be a tad bit controversial as a “favorite” of the series. He’s done atrocious things, can’t be trusted, and when it comes down to it, is a bit of an idiot and a coward. But he got what was coming to him. At first seeing him suffer was fun. But then it got weird. Fast. Much like Daenerys, Theon undergoes an evolution of sorts, in the wrong direction. Devolution would be more accurate. And this is what makes him one of my  favorites. To be clear, this is more of a credit to Martin’s writing not the downward spiral of a hated character. The fact that I can hate and then feel pity for a virtual human being in a fictional universe, again a credit to Martin’s imagination and writing skills.

  4. Arya Stark

Last but not least Arya Stark, the little ninja of the series. Not much needs to be said here. If you're a fan of the series, there's a plethora of reasons to fall in love with Arya. But to me, she's just pure bad ass. Period.

There you have it. Agree or disagree, but I think every character in this series has at least a fan or two. Martin has weaved together an incredable story that (unlike other series) is entirely solid. From the characters to the plot to the settings. So it's no wonder ASoIaF has such a massive following. I can honestly say that every charaacter is my favorite but if I had to choose this list would be that list.
