Best Tourist Attractions in Mackinaw City, MI

The top tourist destination in Northern Michigan is Mackinac Island, but what about the attractions on the mainland? There are many things to see and do before you set foot on the ferry that are often overlooked.  Taking time to appreciate the mainland attractions is a sure way to add value to any Northern Michigan vacation. 

  1. Colonial Michilimackinac

    One of four Mackinac State Parks offerings in the greater Mackinaw Area,   Colonial Michilimackinac takes you back in time.  Costumed interpreters reenact what life was like during the height of the fur trade on the Straits of Mackinac.  You will meet Indians, Solders and voyageurs as you tour this 18th century fort.

  2. Mackinac Bridge Museum

     

    Also known locally as the Iron Worker’s Museum this is the palce to go for all things Mighty Mac.  Fascinating videos lead you through the history of the longest susupention span in the Western Hemisphere and introduces you to the men who built it.  

  3. Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum

    For over forty years the Icebreaker Mackinaw kept the Straits of Mackinac safe for the many merchant ships that plied her waters.  Now decommissioned the ship is docked and open to the public for tours.  See the inside of one of the great icebreakers in United States Coast Guard History.

  4. Mill Creek Discovery Park

    Another of the Mackinac State Historic Parks family, Mill Creek focuses on the natural history of the area.  Miles of nature trails are accented by a zip line and canopy bridge that were recently added.  The site also features a working saw mill, staffed by historical interpreters that showcase the area’s history as a major source of the timber that built America.

  5. Mackinaw Crossing Laser Light Show

    The perfect end to your day in Mackinaw City is also one of the few free attractions available.  Every night at dusk the Mackinaw Crossings shopping area features a Laser Light show set to music.  Perfect for kids of all ages the show takes place in the performance court near the fountain.
