Five best movies based on video games

Published: November 30, 2013

Movies based on video games are notorious for being extremely bad. The vast majority of them are cheesy, nothing like the game, and just plain terrible. But there are a few which are actually really, really good. Here are the five best movies based on video games:

  1. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Advent Children had some big shoes to fill considering Final Fantasy VII is one of the best RPGs of all-time. Advent Children could have been a huge  disappointment but it ended up being amazing. It's a computer animated film which, for a game like this, probably made it better.

  2. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Probably the best live action movie based on a video game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was a good film just in its own right. I was never a fan of the Prince of Persia video games but thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Gemma Arterton certainly didn't hurt things either.

  3. Silent Hill

The Silent Hill movie doesn't stick exactly to the plot of the video games but it wasn't bad for a horror movie. It was much more gory and violent than the games were but the special effects were pretty good and it ended up doing pretty well at the box office.

  4. Resident Evil

Resident Evil was actually a great movie and it won several awards, including Milla Jovovich being named best actress. It spawned an entire franchise of movies which has since pretty much gone completely off the rails but the first is worth seeing if you're a fan of the series.

  5. Mortal Kombat

This list just wouldn't be complete without Mortal Kombat on it. Mortal Kombat was cheesy, yes, but it had just the right amount of cheese so that it was funny but wasn't ruined by it. Mortal Kombat is pretty much everything you would expect from a movie based on a fighting game.

Movies based on video games generally aren't very good. These are the five best video game movies worth seeing. One other good honorable mention would be Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. How can a movie go wrong with Angelina Jolie as the main character?
