Top 10 best selling video games of all time

Published: November 20, 2013

The video game indusry is growing to be one of the largest entertainment industries today. Video games have even been known to outperform movies in terms of sales and revenue (source). With many games literally selling in the tens of millions of copies, that should come as no surprise. Here are the top ten best selling video games of all time (as of 11/19/13).

  1. Wii Sports

    Copies Sold: 82.98 million

    System: Nintendo Wii

    Metacritic Score: 76

It might be surprising to see Wii Sports at #1 but keep in mind that this game was bundled with every Nintendo Wii console so everytime someone bought a Nintendo Wii, someone got Wii Sports with it. That's the sole reason for the ridiculous amount of "sales" this game acquired.

  2. Super Mario Bros.

    Copies Sold: 40.24 million

    System: NES

    Metacritic Score: N/A

The original Super Mario Bros. on NES is a classic that pretty much every game has played at least once. Like Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros. was bundled with the NES which is a reason for its large sales.

  3. Tetris

    Copies Sold: 35 million

Systems: Game Boy, Game Boy Color

    Metacritic Score: N/A

Tetris is another classic that is on a ton of platforms nowadays. The fact it can be played for free on most mobile phones has repopularized the game among this generation.

  4. Mario Kart Wii

    Copies Sold: 34.26 million

    System: Nintendo Wii

    Metacritic Score: 82

Mario Kart has always been a fan favorite since it came out on SNES way back in 1992. Mario Kart Wii brought motion controls to the franchise, giving it new life and a new fanbase of young gamers.

  5. Wii Sports Resort

    Copies Sold: 31.89 million

    System: Nintendo Wii

    Metacritic Score: 80

Oh look, another Nintendo game. Nintendo really knows how to set sales records, don't they? Wii Sports Resort was bundled with new Wii consoles after it came out and also had a bundle with Wii MotionPlus.

  6. New Super Mario Bros.

    Copies Sold: 30.38 million

    System: Nintendo DS

    Metacritic Score: 89

New Super Mario Bros. is pretty much considered the best Nintendo DS game there is. It combined old school Mario Brothers gameplay with some new mechanics and controls to make it feel fresh and new. The result was one of the best Mario games to ever be released.

  7. Grand Theft Auto V

    Copies Sold: 29 million

    Systems: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

    Metacritic Score: 97

A newcomer to the list as GTA V was only released in September 2013. Considering its short time on the market, you can expect this game to move up a few spots on the list in due time. GTA V is the pinnacle of the Grand Theft Auto series thus far.

  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops

    Copies Sold: 28.95 million

Systems: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Windows PC, OS X, Nintendo DS

    Metacritic Score: 74 - 88

About time we hit a Call of Duty game, right? Call of Duty: Black Ops is currently the best selling game of all time according to the numbers on VGChartz. It did kind of cheat to get the record, though, since the Nintendo DS version put it over the top with another half a million on that platform.

  9. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

    Copies Sold: 28.76 million

Systems: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Windows PC

    Metacritic Score: 70 - 88

Gamers complained about how many problems Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had but it still was one of the best selling games in the franchise. Seeing as how it was on fewer platforms than Black Ops was, one could even say this is the most successful CoD game overall.

  10. Wii Play

    Copies Sold: 28.08 million

    System: Nintendo Wii

    Metacritic Score: 58

It is a bit surprising to see how well Wii Play sold considering how poorly it was received by critics. A 58/100 score may be described as "mixed" on Metacritic but let's be honest, it's bad. The game wasn't bundled with a console like the other top-selling Wii games either. People actually wanted to buy this!

So there you have the top ten best selling video games ever. The list is surprisingly dominated by Nintendo titles with nine out of ten games showing up on a Nintendo console (the only exception being GTA V). Most of the top sellers were bundled versions of games, however, so their numbers did get artificially inflated.
