The 10 Best Homemade Products to Save You Money!

Published: February 22, 2015

If you are anything like me, browsing the cleaning and laundry aisles at your favorite store can be somewhat daunting. Either the good stuff is too expensive and while the not so good stuff is reasonably priced...well, its not so good.

The laundry aisle is not the only one inundated with high priced products. Have you shopped for dusting spray lately? Or even cleaners? How about a reed diffuser to make your house smell good? All of these things can cost way more than they should.

But what can you do instead? Suck it in and buy the expensive brand or take your chances with something more reasonably priced? I say neither!

Simply make your own products! It is not as hard as you may think. And when you see the difference in cost, you are going to be very happy you did it!

Read on to see the Best 10 Home Made Products to Save You Money!

  1. Homemade Laundry Detergent

Here is what you need to make your own laundry soap.

    1. 1 Cup of Borax

    2. 1 Cup of Washing Powder (Arm and Hammer is one)

    3. 1 bar or 4.5 ounces of shaved bar soap. (Fels-Neptha, ZOTE, Ivory are all great choices)

Instructions: Thoroughly mix for 5 minutes and voila--thats all there is too it!

    Usage: 1Tbsp per load

Each batch yields 32 ounces of powder which is anywhere from 32-64 loads depending on usage. Its also safe for HE washers!

Another great thing is you don't have to stick to this recipe. Jazz it up if you want. Add some fabric softener crystals. Basically make it the way you want it to be!

  2. Homemade Dusting Oil

This is one of my favorite home made products. Not only is it so simple to make but it works just as well as Murphys Wood Oil Soap. I could not believe the results I got the first time I used it. I will never go back to store bought wood products.

    Ingredients:

    1 Cup of vegetable oil

1/3 Cup of fresh squeezed juice (lemon, lime or orange)

Combine both ingredients into a clean spray bottle and shake! Thats its! You are ready to tackle dust and leave behind a shine you will love!

  3. Homemade Dish Washing Soap

This recipe is very close to the one for homemade laundry detergent. The ingredients are the same but the preparation is different.

You will need: 1 3/4 cup of boiling water

    1 Tbsp Borax

1 Tbsp grated soap (ZOTE, Fels-Naptha)

Combine Borax and grated soap in a medium size bowl. Pour boiling water over the mixture and stir until the shaved soap has melted.

Let it cool on the counter for the next 6-8 hours stirring occasionally. This will allow the soap to gel.

After it has gelled, transfer to a squirt bottle and if you like add some essential oils for a nice aroma. Shake well to mix ingredients.

Simple and easy on your wallet!

  4. Homemade Fabric Softener Liquid

There are many recipes for this but this is the one I like the best. Its cheap, easy to make, customizable and works!

You will need: 1 cup of cheap hair conditioner

1 1/2 cups of white vinegar

    Tsp Essential Oil

    3 cups of water

Mix the water, vinegar and essential oils in a bowl. Add in the hair conditioner and whisk until it is all mixed well. You can customize this with your favorite scented essential oils so your laundry comes out smelling wonderful!

Worried about chemicals? No problem! Leave the conditioner out and you still have a great fabric softener!
