Top Ten Places to eat in Kernersville

Published: January 21, 2015

The town of Kernersville North Carolina is located at the heart of the Piedmont Triad surrounded by Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. Located between both Interstate 40’s and accessed easily from Highway 311. It continues to strive to maintain and small town friendly atmosphere and is a great place to visit and have a bite to eat. Check out the recommendations below. I have dined at each place often, a few since I was a kid!

  1. OutWest Steakhouse & Saddle Room

Outwest was opened in 1996 when I was in my late teens. I have fond memories dining here with my grandparents who enjoyed the upscale but casual feel of the place. The inside is filled with southwestern décor that is typical of a steakhouse, but Outwest does a bit more tastefully. Enjoy wonderful steaks and a menu that also offers fresh seafood and much more with fireplaces included both inside and out in the dining areas.

  2. J. Pepper's Southern Grille

    J. Peppers has been around a couple years but I just started dining here recently. Its location is a bit hidden so it’s not noticed readily when driving by. It has a very comfortable atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor dining areas and a fully stocked bar with lots of wines and local brews. They source their ingredients locally so everything is fresh and they add and change items on the menu as the seasons change.  Occasionally on a Friday or Saturday night they will have local entertainment so you can have a fresh appetizer and drink a brew while listening to music.

  3. Don Juan's Mexican Restaurant

This Mexican restaurant looks and feels like most other restaurants that boast the same theme of being a Mexican eatery. But the food and the staff at this location separates them from the rest. Fast, friendly service coupled with hot food and one of the best Margaritas around make Don Juan’s worth the visit.

  4. Smitty’s Grille

Looking for a place to eat that wants to try and fool you into to NOT wanting to stop, but you really should no matter what! This is it. Opened in 2005 at the end of one of the older shopping centers in Kernersville, Smitty’s wants to deceive you with its outer appearance than smack you in the face when you come in and punch you in your gut when you get the food. Inside is small but very comfortable and fun. The service is very friendly and the seafood and burgers are outstanding.  It’s mostly bar seating inside with LOTS of good drinks in addition to a nice outdoor dining area.  As they like to say at Smitty’s, "Come and Escape life for a while."

  5. Olympic Family Restaurant

I have been eating at this restaurant since I moved to North Carolina with my family in 1986. This is one of the few family restaurants that remain in the local area and we are lucky it is. This is a local place that remembers your name. The breakfast is outstanding and the lunch and dinner rarely leaves you disappointed. But in my humble opinion you want to go here for breakfast hands down. Great service, great food and a comfortable ambience just as a family restaurant should be.

  6. Captain Tom's Seafood & Oyster Bar

Another establishment I have been frequenting since the 80’s. The Captain has been serving seafood in Kernersville since 1972 and one visit you’ll know why. The food is always fresh, the portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable. You can dine in a relaxed atmosphere with friendly service and plenty of room in their spacious dining area or call in and order, pick it up and take it home or back to work. Either way you will be satisfied.

  7. Cagney’s Kitchen of Kernersville

Cagney’s is a Kernersville favorite that seems to be always crowded. They have the best customer service that I have experienced in the area and there food is a mixture of Greek and southern cuisine with a big menu of everything in between. Cagney’s is part of a growing group of restaurants and the owners seem to be committed to good food and great service.

  8. Clark’s Barbecue

If you can’t make it to Lexington this place is the next best thing! They serve Lexington style pit cooked BBQ and have been doing it in Kernersville since 1993. With a shortage of good BBQ places in the local area, Clarks fills a void. I have been eating Clarks BBQ since my high school days and still enjoy it today with visits on a monthly basis. With a country style atmosphere that you expect at a BBQ joint and efficient friendly service it’s great for a quick affordable meal

  9. China Palace

With a lack of good consistent Chinese restaurants in the area, China Palace steps up and has been for years. With a P.F Chang-esque type menu it’s one of the best. The food is great, the portions are large and the service is fast and friendly. It’s a fantastic find I made a few years back and I continue to return whenever me and my family are hungry for Chinese food.

  10. Doss’ Old Fashion Ice Cream

2015 brings us 30 years of Doss' Old Fashion Ice Cream. A Kernersville Landmark, I have memories here with both grandparents and parents. Currently making memories with my kids and I hope there are places like this, if not this place, that I can take grandkids too. Offering hotdogs, burgers and ice cream that are all the best, just ask any local. Family owned and operated all 30 years the Doss family brings you great food, awesome service and comfy, cozy, delightful, fun, relaxed, simple and familiar atmosphere to enjoy it in.

There are many other great places to eat in Kernersville I have tried to include a list that includes a variety of different style foods and menus as well as the places that I have had the best experiences and have made good memories with family and friends. All these places have an environment that welcomes you to make memories of your own not just have a meal. If you just want a meal go thru a drive thru. Bon Appétit and have fun!
