The Best Gifts for a Hiker

Published: January 12, 2015

This list is about some of the best gear to buy for someone who enjoys hiking. The items chosen were all used by me personally and/or recomended by other hikers.

  1. Osprey Backpack

A backpack is the most imporant item for a hiker. It needs to be comfortable, durable, and spacious, and it always helps to come from a customer-friendly company. Osprey backpacks come in all shapes and sizes, and their All Mighty Guarantee means that the company will fix or replace their products, no questions asked, for life.

  2. Big Agnes Tent

A tent is the next most important thing for a hiker to have. Big Agnes tents are set apart by their ability to keep out inclement weather, always a big concern for hikers. They are light and easy to set up and take down.

  3. Salomon Hiking Boots

Salomon hiking boots are very popular with hikers, due to their high durability, and the comfort they provide even in cold, wet conditions.

  4. Black Diamond Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are very useful for hikers in assisting them over rough terrain and easing the pressure on their knees during ascents and descents. Black Diamond poles are particularly well suitied for hikers because of their compactability and ease with which they're repaired.

  5. Geigerrig Hydration Pack

Hydration packs are necessary for carrying water on long hikes. What makes the Geigerrig Hydration Pack special are its features, which include a built-in filter, and a pressurized pump. Since it can spray water, the Geigerrig can be used for cleaning dishes or giving yourself a primitive shower in addition to keeping you hydrated.

  6. Darn Tough Socks

While a little pricier than other brands of socks, hikers love Darn Toughs due to their lifetime warranty. If you wear a hole in your socks the company will replace them for free, for life!

  7. Buff Headband

A Buff is a great hiking accessory. Made with wicking material, it can be worn several different ways making it a highly useful item.

  8. Nalgene Water Bottle

Nalgene's products are made in the USA, BPA free, and dishwasher safe. Hikers love their durability and many creative uses, such as a massage roller for sore muscles, or a hot water bottle that can be put in your sleeping bag in cold weather.

  9. Kinetic Battery Charger

Chargers can be a good idea for hikers who might be worried about their phone or camera dying in the backcountry. Since even chargers that have to be plugged in may die, and trees can block the sun from solar chargers, kinetic battery chargers have become a popular choice for hikers, as they rely only on your movement to build up a charge.

  10. Synthetic Jacket

Synthetic jackets are good for hikers, because they are lightweight, compactable, and warm, even after they've gotten wet (unlike down jackets).

  11. GoPro Camera

GoPro cameras are great for hikers due to their small size, wide lens, and waterproof casing. They take high quality photos and videos, easily capturing all the best moments of your journey!

Of all these items, I would say that the Osprey backpack is the most important, since without it a hiking trip would be impossible; it's necessary for carrying all your other gear! However, all these items are important if you want to make sure your hiking adventure is as fun, comfortable, and safe as possible.
