10 Things you should try when visiting Wilmington NC.

Published: October 29, 2014

Wilmington North Carolina has been home of many budding attractions as well as growing industries.  It has been nicknamed by some as the new "Wilmywood" because of the influx from the filming community.  The city is within distance of some major beaches and has been used in some recent films.  The culture and diversity that Wilmington has is inviting and entertaining.  Here I share some of the best kept secrets that are limited to this growing city and the surrounding areas.  I have traveled a lot in my life and have found many food venues, theatre venues and artistic scenes to be unique.  Hope you take the time to visit each and every one of these.

  1. Thanlian Hall

Thanlian Hall is the home of many theatrical plays and features.  Placed in the heart of downtown, It has a very cozy seating and a comfortable atmosphere.  The recent upgrades to the stage and seating have created the optimal sound and viewing.  The companies that perform have introduced a new twist on vintage shows to create a more modern interpretation.  The pricing is reasonable and the concession stand caters to all ages. Anyone visiting Wilmington should take the time to check out atleast one show.

  2. Britts donuts

Where do I begin with Britts Donuts?  The taste is hands down the best.  Its like hot creamy, melty, buttery sweetness all rolled into one.  Hailed by many as the "best donut" you will ever eat.  Britts is located in Carolina Beach NC which is a short drive from Wilmington.  It is surronded by an updated boardwalk that features shops as well as fun rides.  You can buy the donuts by the singles or dozens.  So if you are in the market for a delicious desert with some entertainment don't forget to drop by and visit Britts Donuts.

  3. Port City Chop House

Port City Chop House is a very upscale steakhouse located near wrightsville beach.  The price is high but well worth it.  The chefs take their time in choosing the best product and cooking methods to produce the most mouth watering dishes.  The wine pairing is phenominal and gives you a feel of elegance.  The dinning room is welcoming and very comfortable.  The staff is courteous as well as very professional.  Port City Chop Houses' food and ambience sets it apart from most of the restraunts in the area.  It is a must try while in the local area.

  4. The Cotton Exchange

The Cotton Exchange is alive with crowds of people daily.  Located in downtown Wilmington, it is home of various shops.  There is a shop for most everyone in the family.  If you get tired of shopping, The Cotton Exchange has some unique restraunts and a coffee shop that allows you to take a rest in.  The dinning venues contain some of the most delicious foods and fun atmosphere.  the cofee shop also allows your visiting four legged hound friend to hang out while enjoying a cup of the various selected daily brews.  So if you are in the Wilmington area don't forget to stop by and spend some time enjoying what the Cotton Exchange has to offer.

  5. The Farmers Market

The Farmers Market takes place every saturday from 8am-1pm starting April 5th and continues until November 22nd.  It is located on the Riverfront in downtown Wilmington.  The various venders are from local restraunts as well as local businesses.  They have a range of products from plants to wines and (some of my favorites) breads.  They even have a booth for your four legged friends.  So if your in town stop on down to the Downtown Farmers Market.

  6. Mayfaire Town center

If you like shopping this is the center for you.  While in town everyone should check out Mayfaire Town Center.  The movie theater onsite features Imax 3D as well as a very extensive concession stand.  There is a plethera of restraunts with different flavors to try.  If you like books, they have a Barnes and Noble complete with a coffee shop inside.  There is a little for everyone in the family to enjoy.  So if shopping is your idea of a good time stop on by Mayfaire and experience shopping at its finest.

  7. USS North Carolina Battleship

As a member of the Navy I have been on a few ships in my life.  This tour realy brings out what some of the living condition were in tightly confined place.  The self guided tour allowes you the opportunity to walk at your own pace and experience each nugget of enlightenment.  Naval ships of today are a little more updated and refined but still are very close for comfort at times.  Some of the points to see are the living quarters, engine rooms and medical facilities.  Walking through the ship you can imagine what it must have been like to be on the water for months at a time.  So if you are in town for a stay just take a ride across the water from Downtown Wilmington and take a tour.

  8. North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher

Recently updated, the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher has a very unique touch to it.  The displays are impeccable and exhibits are exquisite.  one can spend a whole day walking through and looking at everything they have to offer. They have a reasonable price and are located a well worth drive from wilmington.  So if you ever find yourself trying out those Britts donuts, then swing on by the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

  9. Downtown Riverfront Wilmington NC

Now here is a feature that everyone staying in wilmington should visit.  The Downtown Riverfront bolsters a very unique and entertaining wooded walk along the water.  There is always something going on.  Any day of the week you can enjoy great food and fun little shops.  There is docking available for the sailing aficionados.  It is also the home of The Coast Guard USCGC Diligence.  If you like the water, you can take a narrated tour on the Henrietta III along the Cape Fear River.  Some of the restraunts include seafood, of course, and french persuasion.  There is definitly something for everyone on a trip to Wilmington NC Downtown Riverfront.

  10. Greenfield Lake Amphitheater

The final stop on the list is a tune driven luxury.  The Greenfield Lake Amphitheater is set in a beautful area with a gorgeous lake view backdrop.  The amphitheater is constructed with perfection so that the wonderful sound that is made travels to all areas of the seating arena.  It bolsters a long list of great musical performers that have provided amazing exhibits of talent.  So if you like to sit out in nature and listen to a few good tunes, then this is definitly the venue for you.
