The top Whey proteins on the market

Published: August 14, 2014

This list of whey proteins is compiled from extensive research on the products as well as having used most of them to supplement my diet. There will be a general nutrition guide given with each protein. (The calories, servings, price, etc. may differ based on flavor)

These top 10 whey proteins will be ranked on a scale of 1-10 in the following categories:

1. Mixability

2. Taste

3. Brand Reputation

4. Value

5. Quality

There will also be an overall rating out of 10 that will be given as well. I highly suggest giving these proteins a try if you are looking for a supplement that will help you but on some extra muscle.

  1. Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey

Optimum Nutrition is one of the best brands out there. If you're looking for a protein that is high quality with a very good price, then this is the protein for you. Optimum continues to deliver year after year and they are always coming out with great new products.

Theres a reason that this product got the ratings it did. The 5lb tub of this whey is enough to supplement 74 servings. That is all for the price of $52.99. This equates to roughly $0.72 a serving.

    Overall: 10/10

  2. Cellucor Cor-Performance Whey

Cellucor is still a relatively new brand in the sense that it was not known as a credible brand up until around 2010 or later. Sense then, they have not only been able to create an incredible whey protein product, but they have also created supplements for pre-workout, weight-loss, etc. that have made a huge name for this brand. It was the pre-workout C4 that exposed Cellucor as a brand to me and I was sold ever sense. Give this protein a try if you are hesitant about the tastes of other proteins because this is the best tasting on the market.

4 lbs of this whey goes for around $49.99. There is 54 servings in the 4 lb tub which comes out to about $0.93 a serving. Still not too bad.

  3. Musclepharm Combat Powder

Well, the packaging on this product says it all. They package well, they look good from the outside...but it's what's on the inside that matters. Musclepharm really seemed to take off when professional UFC fighters and other pro athletes started to market it with Musclepharm. They said they used Musclepharm so we should too...well I agree. Musclepharm makes quality products and you can really get your bang for the buck with all of their products as well.

    Brand Reputation: 10/10

    Value: 10/10

    Quality: 8.5/10

I found a 4lb tub (52 servings) of this protein going for around $40.99 on the internet. That is about $0.79 a serving. The reason that the quality rating is lower is because Musclepharm likes to use proprietary blends in their supplements. This basically means that they don't tell you exactly how many grams of something is in a product, they instead put it all together and give it as a total amount.

    Overall: 9.5/10

  4. GNC Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60

This here is a great protein. Supercharged amount of whey protein and it is a GNC brand. GNC has built up a great name for itself in the world of supplements. They not only sell hundreds of different brands, but they also sell their own brand and it is top of the line quality. Be aware thought, you will have to pay for this quality as it is only available in the GNC stores.

    Brand Reputation: 10/10

    Value: 5/10

    Quality: 10/10

The value really takes a hit on this one because in this 3lb (17 serving) tub, you have to pay a hefty $66.99. Oh, and thats the price only if you are a member. So if you can afford to pay $3.94 a serving, then this is a great product, if not, then there are many more options.

    Overall: 8.5/10

  5. Optimum Nutrition Pro Gainer

Another Optimum Nutrition powder in the top 5. They don't mess around. You already know the background about ON so lets get to the facts. This protein is great if you are looking for a mass gainer thats not going to lead to fat gains like a lot of supplements out there. Pretty much all of the carbs in this product are complex. Which means you won't have an insulin spike and lead to fat storage.

    Taste: 9/10

    Brand Reputation: 10/10

    Value: 6.5/10

    Quality: 10/10

The mixability is going to be worse in supplements with high carb content because its starchy and has tendancies to clump. Regardless, this is a great product even though a 5lb tub offers only 14 servings. The 5lb tub goes for around 41.99 which comes out to about $3.00 a serving. So thats better than GNC's, but still not great.

    Overall: 8.5/10

  6. BSN Syntha-6 Isolate

BSN is a brand that hasn't had a lot of success with a lot of different products but this is one that seems to have gotten a little more hype than the rest.

A 4lb tub of this whey isolate can go for around $49.99. There are 48 servings in a tub which makes this protein go for about $1.04 a serving.

    Overall: 8/10

  7. MHP Up Your Mass

Okay, hear me out on this one. You may have never heard of Up Your Mass...You probably have never even heard of MHP, but this has been a great product for me with great value sense I have started lifting 5-6 years ago. Give this one a try to put on some extra mass and you won't regret it.

    Fat: 11g

    Taste: 9/10

    Brand Reputation: 6/10

    Value: 8.5/10

Like a said, look at this one as an underdog product. It won't disappoint you. A 5lb tub with 17 servings can go for as little as $30.29. This is $1.78 a serving. Not bad considering its a mass gain product and not just a whey protein.

    Overall: 8/10

  8. Muscletech Platinum 100% Whey

This is another one that you should give a try if you have problems with bad tasting proteins. This protein isn't going to blow you away but it has a lot to offer for a reasonable price.

    Calories: 130

    Fat: 1.5g

    Carbs: 4g

  9. Dymatize Nutrition Iso 100 Hydrolyzed Whey

Dymatize Nutrition is a brand with a long product line that goes way beyond just whey protein. They offer a lot of pretty unique flavors for a protein that may be worth giving a try! This is a hydrolyzed whey supplement so it gets delieved to your muscles even faster than whey alone.

You can find a 5lb tub of this protein for about $57.99. That said, you will get around $0.79 a serving.

    Overall: 7.5/10

  10. Universal Nutrition

Universal Nutrtion Real Gains is another mass gaining supplement. Once again I stay away from the mass gainers that can add fat. This is considered a "lean" gainer. This product is one of the most affordable lean gainers which makes it leap other lean gainers in my mind.

    Calories: 610

    Fat: 6g

    Carbs: 87g

    Protein: 52g

    Mixability: 5.5/10

    Taste: 7.5/10

    Brand Reputation: 7.5/10

    Value: 8/10

    Quality: 7.5/10

A 6.85lb (21 serving) tub goes for $38.99. Remember, you can also pay more for a bigger tub in most proteins. I am trying to keep all of the supplements around the 4-6lb sizes. This one also sells for $49.99 for 10+ lbs (31 servings). This all comes out to roughly $1.86 for the 6.85lb and $1.61 for the 10+ lb size.

    Overall: 7/10

Optimum Nutrition's 100% Gold Standard Whey runs away with this one and will continue to for years to come. They set the standard for supplements and will always be one of my favorites for that reason.
