The 5 Best Places to Eat in Durham on a Budget

Published: June 8, 2014

Everyone is on a budget these days, and who can blame them? Given the economy its sometimes hard to remember what it was like when you could go out and treat yourself whenever you felt like it. Now it feels like you have to plan 3 months in advance in order to even go to McDonalds!

Have no fear though! You can still eat out on a budget. Below are the top places to eat in Durham if you don't have a whole lot of 'throwing-about money' around.

  1. Dame's Chicken & Waffles

Was there really any question as to what would be the top place to go in Durham? Dame's Chicken & Waffles is a staple of Durham, just as the Bull is. Its not only do they have a great atmosphere, but the staff is really friendly as well. I admit I was skeptical at first about the idea of chicken and waffles, however I am now a firm believer that is it one of the best inventions of mankind!

  2. Toast

From the ooey-gooey melted cheese on their sanwiches to their satifying soups, Toast is a great place to go for a meal under $9. One of my favorite things to get here are their crostinis. Not only are they yummy, but for under $3 they're great if you're looking to just have a quick, light lunch.

  3. Daisy Cakes

    Whipped cream icing.....

    Did you get that?

    WHIPPER CREAM ICING!

If you're a serious sweet tooth like me, Daisy Cakes is a no-brainer for a place to go for delicious sweet treats. Not only that, but they also have some awesome lunch menu items. They have a pretty small location so you don't have to worry about dining with a huge crowd if you're looking for an intimate setting.

Also, they have some of the tastiest gluten-free items in Durham!

  4. Byrd's BBQ

I think the picture speaks for itself, don't you?

From their oh so tasty pulled pork to their crispy fried chicken you can't go wrong with their menu. They also have homemade potato chips which are excellent! For under $10 you can get a small plate, with 2 sides, hushpuppies and a large drink. Such a deal!

  5. Taqueria Los Comales

If you're looking for great tasting, authentic Mexican food than look no futher than Taqueria Los Comales. They've got a lot of food on their menu to choose from, but my favorite is their Los Comales Breakfast. You get eggs, steak, rice, beans, salsa and tortillas for under $8!

Do yourself a favor when you visit their website though - turn your volume down lest you be blasted back by their awesome jingle!

As someone who is use to living paycheck to paycheck I understand the importance of treating yourself every so often. It can be difficult to do with a budget. However, given a little discipline, there's no reason why you can't set aside $20 a month to go out and treat yourself like you deserve.

Have a great one!
