The best golf courses in the greater Coachella Valley area.

Published: May 30, 2014

Imagine this. Waking up in the morning, looking out your time share's window and seeing palm trees swaying back and forth, against a back drop of chocolate mountains. You open your window and take a deep breath. You can smell the scent of a freshly mowed lawn. You know, this isn't your neighbors yard. You came here for a reason. You quickly put on a visor and sunglasses. Excited, you close the door behind you, golf clubs in tow. You can't stop thinking about that hole in one that you know you are going to get.

Sounds pretty wonderful, right? Palm Springs and the surrounding cities within the Coachella Valley, is an amazing place to vacation when you want to get away, and relax, and GOLF. I have decided to compose a list of the top ten golf courses in the Palm Spings, CA area. There are currently 110 world-class golf courses in the Coachella Valley. Trust me, when I say, this is not going to be easy, to choose only 10.

  1. Desert Willow Golf Resort

Located in Palm Desert, Just minutes away from Palm springs is the Desert Willow Golf Resort, which offers two of the Coachella Valley's best plays. The Firecliff Course which has been voted #1 in the valley for the 3rd year in a row by Desert Golf Magazine measures 7,065 yards.

If you are a skilled golfer and would like a challenge, this is the course for you. This course offers a true test of one's skills. Golfers must negotiate their way around and extensive natural habitat areas, more than 100 bunkers and water features. This is one golf course where you can be challenged in game, but also take in the breath taking views of the desert. This is a better way to see nature in the desert than going on a jeep tour!

  2. La Quinta Resort and Club- Mountain Course

La Quinta, Where I was born and raised. This quaint city is nestled away in a cove of the Santa Rosa chocolate mountains. It's also home to a world-class golf course that is litterally carved into the Santa Rosa Mountains.

The average play time on this course is 4-5 hours. The first 9 holes are fairly easy, and offer views of the resort and the surrounding homes. Then you make your way back into the mountains and that is where the real challenge and fun begins. This is one of the most fun/ beautiful courses I have come across in the Palm Springs area.

  3. PGA West- Greg Norman Course

Another Beautiful golf course in the La Quinta area, Bordering the towns of Coachella and Indio, CA.  Not only is this a fun, relaxing course, a perfect get away, you really feel that you are playing on historic grounds. This course sits 40 feet below sea level, on an ancient ocean floor.

This course is not only challenging, but offers tee boxes on each hole, which means any golfer, with any ability can go out and enjoy a day of golf. The beauty of this course is breath taking, It feature 9 lakes 68 acres of turf and desert scape, and many pockets of wild flowers.

Just remember, NO denim allowed, Collared shirts and Bermuda shorts are required.

  4. Cimarron Boulder Course

The Cimarron Boulder Course is located in Cathedral City, Neighboring town of Palm Springs, CA. This location offers two 18 hole courses. A championship length and an executive length course. This course has a great practice area. It's definitely a plus for a quick practice shots when you are first arriving, or right before you leave Palm Springs, as the Palm Springs international airport is 5 minutes away. On a not so busy day, you can expect to finish this course within 3 hours. During the fall and winter months expect to be playing for 4-5 hours. The upkeep on this course is magnificent. GREEN as far as the eyes can see.

  5. Omni- Rancho Las Palmas West/South

Rancho Mirage, CA. It's a neighboring towin of Palm Springs, CA in the Coachella Valley. When I think if Rancho Mirage, I think Rancho Las Palmas, I think Ted Robinson and his world- class 27 hole golf course. I think of gently rolling terrain, lined with palm trees. I think of the snow capped San Jacinto mountains. I think of the big horn sheep that frequent the area.

To me, this is the most relaxing course in the valley, the views and wild life are breath taking. If you are looking for a very relaxing vacation, I would recommend this course/ resort hands down.

  6. Escena Golf Club

The Escena Golf Club is tucked away in the beautiful Indian Canyons of Palm Springs, CA. This is truly a place that I would call a desert oasis. Super luch landscape and thousands of palm tree at evey hole gives you an illusion that you are no longer on united states soil, but a dream land far away in your own secluded paradise. This course has 4 tees to choose from So you can choose the appropriate challenge per your skills. This course stretches over 7,200 yards from the back tees. Also like most of the courses in the area, NO denim allowed. Collared shirt must be worn and soft spikes are ok.

  7. Shadow Hills Golf Club

You would probably take a look at Indio, CA and make an assumption that there are no golf courses there at all. In reality there are quite a few. With 110 courses in the coachella valley. There is a hidden place called Shadow Hills Golf Club. This is a course that is great for all skill levels. Just remember that when you sign up for T-time and start playing it is pretty much a shot gun run to start but once you hit the links the pace starts to even out and the course is actually a lot of fun! The staff there is very kind and will give you free one on one lessons when on the practice greens!

  8. Tahquitz Creek Legend Course

Do you enjoy street markets? How about live music and prestigious shopping stores? You will love downtown Palm Springs! The Tahquitz Creek Legend Course is a very quick 5 minutes away from downtown Palm Springs. This is where the Legends go to stay and play! Another one of Famous Ted Robinson's designs. 6,600 yards of 40 challenging bunkers and memorable views. An Arnold Palmer staff ready at your fingertips for anything you should need. This course is open to the public and availble for coorporate events, and private parties/ weddings as well. Dont forget to shop for your attire at their golf shop and enjoy a drink at their bar/grill!

  9. Terra Lago South Course

Can we say Tiger Woods, Greg Newman? If you like to golf at courses where famous players have golf before then I recommend you visit Terra Lago located in Indio, CA. The professionals had their chance at this course, now its open to the public to give a it a go. Two courses offering 36 challenging holes. The Terra Lago Course was home to the 1999-2002 PGA Tour Skins games. This facility offers two practice greens, practice bunkers, and a full driving range. 4 tees to choose from, so any skill level can play. Terra Lago is open to the public all year around.

  10. Stone Eagle Golf Course

A true Diamond in the rough, The Stone Eagle Golf Course Located in Palm Desert, CA. Tom Doak took a rugged piece of land and turned it into a diamond. This has proven to be an incredibly hard course. Every shot, including tee shots require you to hit the ball to a specific point. This course also offers a 19th hole!

The course begins 8 miles uphill from the clubhouse itself. It is located up highway 74. Remember the saying "slow to the snow?" It's true with this course. Rember when hitting the ball up the hill, the ball is slower. A tough course to beat. You must have a membership to play here.

So in a nutshell, the list I provided, shows the best golfing locations in the Coachella Valley. Known to many around the world as Palm Springs California. As always I saved the best for last! I hope you enjoy your next visit to Palm Springs and don't forget to visit these courses for some fun in the sun!
