Top 10 Comedy's from the 1970's

Published: April 9, 2014

Don't let the fall of Saigon get you down, these flicks from the 70's are sure to cheer you up. Communists, capitalists, and everyone in between can toast to this far out era for film, wars, drugs, and sex. We stopped putting men on the moon, but it didn't mean we couldn't still have fun.

  1. Blazing Saddles

Sheriff murdered, crops burned, stores looted, people stampeded, and cattle raped. The time has come to act, and act fast. I'm leaving. A Mel Brooks classic, this movie makes you appreciate how easy us City Slickers had it. The Waco Kid would appreciate being mentioned first on this list, but then again, who wouldn't?

  2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Sure, it's not the musical, but really, how many people knew it was based on a musical. Or at least saw the musical. This film has one of the longest theatrical releases in history, and for good reason. Don't be surprised to see guests in costume interacting with the characters.

  3. The Bad News Bears

No, this isn't the Billy Bob version, though I have nothing against that one. This is the orignal, with the late great Walter Matthau leading a motley crue of misfits as athletic as his character in grumpy old men. See what's it like to be the fat kid, before you step up to the plate.

  4. National Lampoon's Animal House

Toga! Toga! No one talks to our pledges that way........This could arguably number one, of all time. And not just because people are sensuous. This movie makes every frat kid feel like everything he was doing in college was right. And all this time I thought you said there were blanks in this gun.

  5. The Jerk

Steve Martin plays a manboy who was raised a poor black child but eventually is told the obvious and decides to set out to discover the world. When you have this movie, you don't need anything. Except this. And that's the only thing you need. And this remote control, but nothing else!

Look, people. This is when comedy was a welcome relief from communism. When the red scare was overwhelmed by the desire to just enjoy mash potato zits, catfish, unathletic fat kids, and near sheriffs. So pop one of these movies in, VHS style, and enjoy a simplier time. It's okay to laugh.
